Cargo trailers are extremely versatile and useful items to have around, especially when it comes time to move. If you’re buying a new house or moving into a new apartment, then having a cargo trailer makes your moving process easy and affordable. Here’s what to know about moving with your cargo trailer.

1. Don’t Overload Your Trailer

Your cargo trailer has a weight limit that you can find in your owner’s manual or on a label on the trailer itself. Make sure you know what that limit is so that you don’t go over it. You can weigh your trailer at a highway weigh station if you need to.

2. Keep Cargo Balanced & Secured

Allowing the boxes or furnishings that you’ve loaded into your cargo trailer to move around freely while you drive can damage your belongings, in addition to potentially damaging your trailer or your towing vehicle. Instead, take the time to balance your cargo load evenly from left to right so that no side of the trailer is placed under too much pressure, as this could pop a tire.

Also, once you’ve put all your cargo in, you’ll need to secure it in place with D-rings, ratchet straps, or even just rope. Cargo that shifts and moves around can cause trailer sway and it can make your trailer unbalanced. So lock those items down!

3. Drive With Care

Once you’re on the road, try to avoid changing lanes or making sudden maneuvers. Signal your intentions well in advance. Stick to a speed that is about 10 miles less than posted speed limits and create a space cushion in front of you so that you can bring your towing setup to a safe stop if need be. Avoid towing in high winds or bad weather.
